30 Years of Fisheries at UMM: Alumni Provide Scholarships to Students

The sense of camaraderie among University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) alumni remains strong and well-preserved. This is exemplified by the awarding of scholarships to several students by alumni of the Fisheries program. The scholarships were presented during a grand reunion held to commemorate three decades of the Fisheries program at UMM. The event, which took place on December 25, was attended by numerous alumni, faculty members, and active students.

The students who received scholarships were those who excelled at regional, national, and international levels. These scholarships were made possible thanks to the many successful alumni spread across various sectors throughout Indonesia, ranging from the fisheries industry and government to entrepreneurship.

“This agenda is not merely a gathering but also a means to strengthen synergy and collaboration between alumni and the institution. We hope alumni will continue to make tangible contributions, whether in curriculum development or supporting active students through mentoring or job opportunities. This is also our commitment to continuously innovate and produce exceptional graduates who are globally competitive,” said the Initiator of the Fisheries Department at UMM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ir. David Hermawan, MP, IPM.

The grand alumni reunion also served as a nostalgic event and an opportunity for alumni to share experiences from their careers in various fields. Additionally, it became a platform to strengthen the alumni network in support of the future development of UMM's Fisheries Program.

The Vice Rector III of UMM, Dr. Nur Subeki, MT, expressed his appreciation for the alumni's contributions in bringing pride to the university. “Your presence and success out there are a reflection of the quality education provided by UMM's Fisheries Program. We hope events like this can serve as an inspiration for future generations,” he stated.

The event included a sharing session on the journey and contributions of alumni under the theme "Building Synergy and Collaboration Among Alumni for the Future of Sustainable Fisheries" and a session to elect the management board of the UMM Fisheries Alumni Association (IKAPI) for the 2025–2029 period. Herman Jaya, S.Pi., was elected as the Chairman of IKAPI. He is an entrepreneur and the Director of PT. Barru Mandiri Nusantara, as well as a newly elected member of the Barru Regency Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) in South Sulawesi for the 2024–2029 term. (*/Will/ind)
