The Excitement of UMM Pesmaba Opening: Presenting a Giant Globe until Parachutists

The release of thousands of Javanese endemic birds was the opening ceremony of the Introduction of New Student Studies (Pesmaba) of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM). Chief of the East Java Regional Police of the Republic of Indonesia (Kapolda), Dr. Toni Harmanto, M.H., released the birds from a giant earth-shaped cage. More than 6,000 students also gathered at the helipad on September 12 to step into the nation's next generation.

The bird release represents a high commitment from UMM to support the green and clean movement. It is also evidence of the assisting seriousness of the White Campus to achieve the target of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and protect the environment from damage.

"This giant globe symbolizes our passion for caring for the earth and protecting the environment. There are many different types of birds in it, such as turtledoves, parrots, finches, emprit, etc. We want people to be inspired to do the same, instead of destroying the earth and its contents," said Ir. Suyatno M.Si., the event's organizer.

Another fascinating feature was the attraction of ten parachutists whom the Brimob Corps Police Headquarters supported. They carry various flags as they land a parachute jump. They started from the red and white flag, UMM Pesmaba, Center of Excellence, Center for Future Work, UMM Pasti, etc. The ten parachutists also landed safely in the middle of the UMM helipad in front of thousands of new students.

The performance amazed not only Indonesian students, but also international students studying at UMM. One of them is Nidhi Priya, who comes from India. She did not expect a parachutist and helicopter attraction at the opening of Pesmaba UMM.

"Actually, I have seen parachutists and helicopters at various occasions and state celebrations in India. However, in a university environment, this is the first time. I didn't expect to see it at a campus event and was amazed," she said.

Nidhi, as she is often called, believes that Indonesia and India have many similarities. It has a large population, potential young people and abundant natural resources. She believes that Indonesian young people, including UMM students, can be a catalyst and take a role in the nation's progress.
