The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) has once again achieved an outstanding milestone. This time, they earned the prestigious 'Exceeds Standards' rating as an Educator Training Institution (LPTK) for the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) in 2024. The award was presented directly by the Directorate of Teacher Professional Education, Directorate General of Teachers and Education Personnel, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, during an event held in Denpasar, Bali, on December 17, 2024.
This success is not only the result of hard work but also a reflection of innovation and synergy within FKIP UMM. The Dean of FKIP, Trisakti Handayani, M.M., revealed that coordination between lecturers, education staff, mentor teachers, and IT administrators has been the key to the successful implementation of the PPG program at UMM.
"We ensure that all elements work synergistically to support the learning process. The close collaboration between lecturers who deliver the material, mentor teachers who guide field practice, and IT administrators who ensure smooth technology operations is our foundation. The PPG learning at UMM is not just a transfer of knowledge, but an integrated process fully supported by information and communication technology," she explained.
Not stopping at internal coordination, FKIP UMM is also committed to exceeding the national PPG curriculum standards. Although national standards have been established, FKIP UMM views this as a starting point, not the endpoint. They strive to add value through innovative courses that are relevant to the development of modern technology.
"We have developed the course 'Management of ICT-Based Learning Media' as part of the elective curriculum. This course equips students with the skills to create technology-based learning media such as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and exploring the Metaverse. We want UMM's future teachers to not only be tech-savvy but also capable of utilizing technology to create creative and effective teaching methods," she said.
To support the implementation of technology-based courses, FKIP UMM has established a dedicated multimedia room designed to enhance digital learning. This room is equipped with Smart TVs, podcast devices, and other modern equipment that allow students to create without limits. The room accommodates only 30 students per session to ensure a more intensive and productive learning process.
"In this multimedia room, students no longer present in the traditional way. They can present ideas using a Smart TV connected to WiFi and other devices. Students also learn to create educational content on platforms like TikTok, podcasts, and other digital learning media. This approach ensures that they are ready to face the demands of modern education," she explained.
In addition to preparing students with technological skills, FKIP UMM also recognizes the importance of a global perspective for future teachers. To this end, they have designed an international Field Experience Program (PPL). In February 2025, five students will be sent to Thailand to practice teaching at international schools. This program aims to provide students with firsthand experience of global educational challenges and broaden their perspectives.
In closing, Trisakti emphasized that the era of globalization requires Indonesian teachers to be able to compete on the international stage, not just be spectators but key players in the world of education. "We must ensure that teachers graduating from FKIP UMM are ready to face global changes. We cannot allow ourselves to be displaced by foreign educators. With the technology and international perspectives we have, let us together become agents of change for the advancement of education in Indonesia," she concluded. (vin/wil/ind)
