Learning using hypnoteaching techniques has not been widely practiced in Indonesia. This prompted the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to address the topic in a thematic guest lecture. Held on January 6, 2025, the lecture focused on "Hypnoteaching for PGSD Teacher Candidates: The Key to Success in Creating Meaningful Learning."
Also present as a speaker was Umar Khadafi, M.Pd., the Owner and CEO of PT Internasional Better Learning Upgrader, who provided new insights. According to him, hypnoteaching is very important for teachers, especially considering that many students base their thesis material on hypnoteaching.
He explained that hypnoteaching is a learning approach that incorporates the principles of hypnosis or hypnotic methods. The main purpose of hypnoteaching is to create a positive and supportive learning environment. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterized by an enhanced focus of attention and high suggestibility. This state usually occurs when someone is watching Korean dramas, playing games, watching commercials, and engaging in other similar activities.
Umar emphasized that hypnosis is scientific and does not involve jinn, mantras, or other clichéd elements. Instead, it utilizes alpha and theta states. Hypnosis is a natural, everyday condition and cannot be used for criminal acts. It only works on clients who are willing and agree to be hypnotized, and it does not impose any forceful influence on their will.
"Hypnosis occurs when humans are in the Alpha and Theta levels of consciousness. However, if humans are in the Beta and Delta levels, they cannot be hypnotized," he said.
This method is considered effective for improving students' abilities. The participants presented seven tips. First, making a strong first impression is important for breaking down students' subconscious minds. Second, building rapport, which means developing a close relationship with students. Third, using attention-focusing statements that encourage students to concentrate more and return to the subject matter, especially if it has drifted off track for any reason.

"The remaining tips are positive statements, which involve conveying positive sentences, emotional anchors, time allocation, and self-image reprogramming. In other words, a teacher must always provide affirmations to boost students' motivation," he continued.
On that occasion, Umar also demonstrated the method directly in front of the participants. He invited PGSD students to concentrate and asked them to stand up and follow the signals to make movements according to the instructions. (*/wil/mrh)
